The purpose of this study is to suggest multi-pillar pension regimes in EU focused on adequacy and sustainability and to analyse the characteristics. Thus, first of all, previous literature is reviewed and adequacy and sustainability is defined. Then, I analyse multi-pillar pension regimes with fuzzy-set ideal type analysis. After choosing four representative states (the Netherlands, France, UK, and Greece) in each regime, the characteristics in each regime are examined. As a result, the Netherlands and Sweden are analysed as a regime having adequate and sustainable pension system. France and Germany are characterized as states having adequate and unsustainable pension system. And UK and Finland are analysed as a regime having inadequate and sustainable pension system. But Greece and Italy including southern European countries are characterized as states having inadequate and unsustainable pension system.
